Complexity in Simplicity
Everybody agrees that Bahasa Indonesia is one of the easiest language to learn.
- It has no past tense, present tense, future tense... It has no tense of any form..!!
- It has no masculine/feminine words..
- It's just a pile of words...
In order to make a sentence, you just need to put all the words together, no need to worry about the ordering... And they would make up a sentence...
You can reorder those words... And they would still make up a sentence, that actually meant something and everybody (every Indonesian, I should say) would understand...
And so, the number of sentences that can be made up from (n) words, is exactly the permutation of (n).
For example: the number of sentences that can be made up from 3 words, is permutation of 3 = 6 sentences.
From 3 simple words, we can make up to 6 completely different and meaningful sentences... That's how complex it is...
Philosophers Language
Bahasa Indonesia is full of ambiguity, as we will observe later...
Everybody is given a chance to make his/her own perception of a sentence. There's no right or wrong, there's no fact or lies, there's no black or white... Everything is in between...
This is the true nature of Bahasa Indonesia... It brings out the philosophers in us...
Case Study
For our case study, we will make combination of 3 little words to observe the complexity and ambiguity of Bahasa.
The words choosen are: Saya, Makan, Apel.
Saya = I, Me, My, Mine
Makan = Eat, Ate, Eaten.
Apel = Apple, Dating.
1. Saya makan apel
Meaning: I am eating an apple.
2. Apel makan saya
Meaning: Apple eats me. This could mean that the apple is possesed with evil spirit or some supernatural power, allowing it to gain superpower strength and the hunger to eat human flesh.
3. Saya apel makan
Meaning: I'm going on a date and we ate.
4. Apel saya makan
Meaning: My apple is eating. It means, the apple is once again being possesed, or it may even be an apple monster GRRRHHHH... having consiousness, and so it eats. We cant determine what kind of food its eating.
5. Makan saya apel
Meaning: Eat me apple. Its like the person is begging to be eaten by the apple. Maybe this person is a member of a satanic sect that worships apples. And the apple monster (which is considered as their god) eats its worshipers. We can only guess...
6. Makan apel saya
Meaning: Eat my apple. In this example, the apple could literally mean an apple or it could also mean an "apple". When a woman says: eat my apple, our imagination wonders what could she possibly mean by "apple"...
Bahasa Indonesia... The magical language...
